Art is the win

Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.
~ Oprah Winfrey

Before he was a big time comedian, Hasan Minhaj was asked if he thought he was going to make it big. “I don’t like that question,” he said. “I fundamentally don’t like that question.” Because the question implies that doing comedy is a means to an end—the Netflix special, selling out the stadium, doing this, getting that.

“No, no, no,” he said, “I get to do comedy…I won. It being predicated on doing X or being bigger than Y—no, no, no. To me, it’s always just been about the work.”

  • This week’s artist is – Tad Smith – a local artist whose work I’ve seen around town but haven’t yet featured. Seeing it again at a recent DAC show and then at the Autumn Arts Festival reminded me to share. Check out his website and instagram for even more!

  • I bought a new pen that can write underwater! And it can write lots of other words, too!
  • Here’s a virtual design archive, built by everyone about everyone for everyone.
  • Though I don’t appreciate it as much as seeing different artists’ renditions of the same prompt, this gallery of AI-generated Bible art is interesting to see (if only to see multiple versions for a single prompt.)
  • Did you hear about (or see) NASA crashing DART into an asteroid? (If you google it something fun happens.)
  • Time is contagious.
  • This year is the Art Supply House’s 20th anniversary! We’ll be celebrating during the last Saturday of October (which is also a customer appreciation day). Do you have your bag ready?
  • The FLC Art Gallery presents the 2022 FACULTY BIENNIAL, featuring artwork by the Department of Art & Design faculty! Show is up until October 19th.
  • The Durango Open Studio Tour is this weekend! A Taster Art Exhibition is being held at Smiley Cafe October 14 (Friday) from 5-8pm for all artists and community members to meet the artists and view a sampling of their artwork. The Durango Open Studio Tour is October 15-16 from 10am-4pm at artists’ homes and studios around Durango.
  • The Durango Downtown Balloon Glow will happen on Friday and Saturday evenings (weather permitting) between 6-7:30.
  • Sunday is open mic night at Mountain Monk Coffee. Sign up at 5:30 if you want to participate and view from 6-8.
  • There are classes/workshops/projects available at Create Art and Tea, the Durango Arts Center, and the Scrapbook Nook. There are a lot more things happening that I don’t include – so if you’re ever looking for something to do, start at WhatsHappeningDurango.com
  • There’s live music scattered about town all week. (Like Ska-BQ on Thursday.) See what else is available here.
  • As the weather starts to cool we start thinking more about fiber arts. In case you experience something similar, we stocked up on more yarns. Swing by and take a look at the color/texture options to see if anything catches your fancy!

When you are just about the work…you won. When you know you put your best into it…you won. When your self-worth isn’t predicated on things outside your control…you won. We’ve already won – we get to create!

Cheers!
