Take a deep breath

Sometimes, the simple things are more fun and meaningful than all the banquets in the world …
~ E.A. Bucchianeri

It’s a busier-than-normal time of year for so many of us. Between work, family, friends… or just traffic… the daily flow seems different. Whatever your life looks like, this week is a good time for a friendly reminder – don’t pause and take a deep breath. At least one. Even better is to pause and take a few deep breaths.

  • This week’s artist is – Matthew Chambers – whose concentric, nested ceramic vessels I glanced at, skipped over, returned to, returned again, and decided that I should share. These sculptures are comprised of individual, wheel-thrown pieces in varying sizes that are embedded within a larger form. Be sure to check out his website or instagram for more!

  • Details of the sun – shown in a composite of 150,000 photos!
  • The details above seems fitting to share now, since we have footage of/from a solar probe touching the sun!
  • Want to learn more about artist pigments and their terms?
  • Here’s a brief bit on tempera. I always laugh when people talk about the “new paint” – just because they’ve only now discovered it!
  • Anyone can be batman. I do this, but with mustaches. In college I made a website that let you draw mustaches on famous pieces of art – perhaps I can resurrect it.
  • This secret library-in-a-library really sounds fun to me. Maybe we need an artist trading card library in the Art Supply House!
  • Heartwarming Soup Sale. Join The Hive and In The Weeds in supporting local families with financial assistance through the winter! In partnership with Lola’s Cafe and The Soup Pallete, we will be having a local Guest Chef cook up fresh soup every other week to sell for a $10 minimum donation per quart. Come warm your hearts with delicious soup at 725 E 2nd Ave this Thursday from 5-6:30.
  • We brought in a variety of new specialty notebooks. The PaintONs by Clairfontaine are ready for painting in addition to other mediums. The Rhodia Goalbooks are great for a planner, meeting notes, and so much more! And Strathmore mixed media pads are great for many things. We try to have something for everyone!

The small things have always brought me the most pleasure. Things like sharing a quiet cup of coffee with my wife each morning. Sitting by a fire reading a good book. Doodling in my sketchbooks. Especially this time of year I can get swept up in ambitions and future plans. Which means it’s time for me to double down on the small things. The outdoors, books, coffee, creative pursuits, and the simple pleasures of life.

Here’s a reminder for this week – don’t forget to pursue your simple pleasures. Pause and enjoy the view, take a deep breath, savor any culinary treats you have, and, as always, make your art!

Cheers!
