Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant?
~ Henry David Thoreau
It’s easy to get caught up in daily life – routines, chores, tasks. It’s easy to see the same people on a daily basis and assume they’re just like us, and that we’re all the same. Of course, that isn’t true. Even if we’re very similar, we have different goals, dreams, histories, and memories.
- This week’s artist is – Jeremy Sams – whose plein air work I stumbled across some time ago. I love seeing plein air pieces in the context they’re created! Check out his website and instagram for portraits, landscapes, murals and more!
- Tom Thomson would have been 145 on Friday.
- Interested in learning watercolor? Here are a couple of online options: joyful watercolor and intro to watercolors.
- Just stumbled across these NOT/BUT comics – click on one to see the other half.
- The idea of a trashy memento journal is interesting – a way to keep the stuff you don’t want to toss but isn’t precious.
- This visual guide to the Aztec Pantheon is fascinating.
- Here are some design lessons from the Edo period in Japan.
- It’s fun to watch James Lewis paint.
- The county fair is next week. Art drop off is Wednesday – if you’re interested in entering anything.
- Cindy Coleman’s new National Park paintings will be on display at Animas Chocolate & Coffee Company all week, starting on Monday.
- Until then, this is the first Friday of the month, so there are a few events to look out for, like Create Art & Tea’s Friday Art for a Cause from 5-7 and the Pop-Up at Buck’s Parlor from 12-5.
- Durango Botanic Garden’s annual bulb sale starts on Friday.
- Friday evening, enjoy the movie Spiderman, No Way Home at Buckley Park, starting at dusk. More info here.
- Every Monday, from 6:30-9, head over to Guild House Games for Chess club. Free, drop in’s welcome. Upstairs at the Main Mall.
- There are classes/workshops/projects available at Create Art and Tea, the Durango Arts Center, and the Scrapbook Nook. There are a lot more things happening that I don’t include – so if you’re ever looking for something to do, start at WhatsHappeningDurango.com
- There’s live music scattered about town all week. Like tomorrow’s concert in the Three Springs Plaza, and Friday at Fox Fire Farms. See what else is available here.
- Even though I feature art/creative products each week, that’s only half of what we offer at the Art Supply House and Custom Frame Shop. The fun thing about custom framing is that its, well, custom! Very commonly we are asked some version of “can you take care of this?” With over 75 years of combined experience, the answer is generally “yes!” There are so many options and variables involved in framing, and we want to focus on the project at hand, so we offer free design consults with an exact quote by appointment. Call or swing by to make yours!
Other people’s points of views can be hard for us to see. We have to expend the time, energy, and focus to listen and truly understand their feelings and views – which may challenge our own! It can be uncomfortable, but it also helps us grow. If you’re anything like me, you look back at words said and thoughts entertained when you were a teenager – and shake your head! I’ve learned and grown since then. I’m continuing to do so (having a toddler really helps you see the world around you differently). Don’t forget to take the opportunity to see the world from a different point of view – and share yours with others. Art is an easy way to do this. As always, the world needs your art!
Cheers!
