If I’m writing my book … that means on some level I believe in a future where this book could exist. ~ R. O. Kwon |
I’ve got a friend who’s going through a rough patch – all their family moved away, it looks like their job is being downsized, they’re struggling financially, and the future is just uncertain. During a recent chat I told them that “they aren’t done yet” and reminded them that, “this too, shall pass”. Whether it’s the best of times or the worst of times, it won’t last.
- This week’s artist is – Ali Cavanaugh – who works in watercolors. Her portraits captured my attention when I first saw them. Looking at them makes me wonder what her subjects were thinking. Check out her website and instagram for more!
- Artemisia Gentileschi would have been 429 on Friday.
- Since July is World Watercolor Month, here’s a joke: I used to own a donkey that would draw my cart… but I sold it for a horse that did watercolors.
- These animals don’t exist yet.
- Can you guess the artist in 4 tries? New puzzle each day.
- Here are 28 facts about time – such as all humans technically live in the past.
- This article, wondering whether we should let the Leaning Tower of Pisa fall, or straighten it up, feels reminiscent of conversations around restoring art. When do we restore versus let it stay original?
- Apparently, Picasso made some how to draw books for his daughter.
- Speaking of Picasso, I stumbled across a mention of his Bull series. It is fun to see “behind the scenes” of the process, at least a bit, as he experiments to discover the essence of a animal.
- Here’s a fun art project – blended watercolor lettering with dual brush pens.
- The 68th annual Four Corners Gem and Mineral Show is this weekend at the fairgrounds. (Which means there are a lot of jewelry and stone workshops if you’d like to learn in a hands-on way.)
- Create Art and Tea’s event calendar for this month is filling up quite nicely.
- There are quite a few events/classes/workshops available for everyone at the Durango Arts Center.
- The Scrapbook Nook has a week full of classes and projects, if you’re looking for something creative to do. Call them to reserve your spot.
- There’s live music scattered about town all week. Like tomorrow’s concert at Buckley Park, Music in the Mountains free mobile stage concerts, and Friday at Fox Fire Farms. See what else is available here.
- There are a lot of local events/classes/workshops happening that I don’t include (like most things that require a ticket purchase) – so if you’re ever looking for something to do, start at WhatsHappeningDurango.com
- We received a pile of new coloring books (including just about every one of Kerby Rosanes‘s). If you know of someone who likes to color, it’s a great time to stock up! If not, we also have new books available if you’d like a new reference or want to learn something new.
Timing matters. Whether or not something is deemed a “failure” all depends on when performance is measured. Let’s say an author gets a book deal and it takes three years to get it published. One year into the project, the book doesn’t yet exist, so it looks like the project is a failure. Two years into the project the book is still incomplete. A failure. 2 years, 11 months, no book available. A failure. Three years – success!
Same project. Different timeframe. This idea applies to many areas of life. You’re not failing. You’re just in the middle of succeeding. You, and your artwork, are always a work in progress. You’re making the world a better place! Keep on keeping on. The world needs your art!
Cheers!
