Better to do something imperfectly than to do nothing flawlessly. ~ Robert H. Schulle |
I’m a planner and researcher and strategizer. When something catches my attention I dive in and learn everything I can about it. Which means that I can end up having a lot of information but little practical experience. That practical experience is invaluable, it helps turn information into knowledge, helps us to actually know something, and is what creates tangible results!
- This week’s artist is – Michael Holter – whose work I’m sure I’ve seen before, but I stumbled across most recently in the Breaking Glass show (linked further below). I enjoyed watching his high-speed watercolor demos. Be sure to check out his website and instagram for even more!
- I’ve been making one-sheet, 6-page booklets for years. Here’s how to make a one-sheet, 12-page booklet.
- Here’s a 41-hour origami knight. I’m currently about 15 hours into a painting…
- This is an interesting look at one person’s 30-day portrait challenge.
- Tonight is the Animas City Night Bazaar – Passeggiata – neighborhood stroll – from 5-9.
- Tomorrow is a regional job fair at the county fair grounds, from 12-3, if you know someone who’s hunting for a job.
- It’s shaping up to be a stunning year for fall colors. The train’s Fall Photographer special is running, if you don’t feel like driving yourself around.
- Cindy Coleman‘s pastel paintings will be on display at Animas Chocolate – the opening reception is Friday from 5-7 if you want to chat with Cindy.
- Join Create Art and Tea with The Victorian Ladies in this commemorative showing of the life works of Dan Nicholl and support the On The Spectrum Foundation. Light refreshments are provided. Friday from 5-7 at Create Art and Tea on Main.
- The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering is this weekend – there’s a lot going on! From Poetry readings, free concerts, art gallery exhibits, rides, breakfasts, a parade, and more! Check out their schedule to see what catches your fancy.
- A friend shared The Painting Center’s show, Breaking Glass, which features all watercolor artists. Learn more about the show here and definitely check out their catalog to see the stunning works!
- Yvonne Lashmett will be teaching a 2 hour painting class of a seasonal classic, “Aspens in Autumn” at Create Art & Tea Gallery on Main Avenue tomorrow (Thursday) from 4-6. More info available on Create’s website. Reservations required.
- There is also a lot of live music scattered around town. See who’s playing where here.
- Don’t want to come in to town? Head out to Fox Fire Farms from 6-9 on Friday for live music. Pack your own picnic meal – get a drink at the winery.
- If you know any students who might be looking for after-school classes/workshops for any students, here’s an overview of what the Durango Arts Center is offering.
- In case Ignacio is more conveniently located, the Dancing Spirit Gallery also has classes and workshops for students.
- Just in case that’s not enough, Artsy Crafty Studio on 3rd Avenue also has classes and workshops.
- Seed Studio is currently enrolling classes for kids of all ages.
- Kristen has been watching and had to jump on these bulk-packs of canvas as soon as she saw they were available. If you’re looking for multiples of the same size canvas, this is a great opportunity!
Imagine if Scott Young decided that he wasn’t good enough at drawing, so he couldn’t get started on his 30-day portrait challenge. He improved quite a bit over 30 days… because he jumped in. He started with what he had and, as he learned more information and a new approach, upgraded to better materials. He experimented with other materials that didn’t work out and he let those experiments fizzle and drop away. He could still learn and grow more – but if he hadn’t started, he would still be stuck back there at the beginning. What do you need to start? Like Scotts, the world needs your art!
Cheers!
