Creativity is simply connecting new dots in new ways.~ Sam Horn |
Everyone looks at the world differently (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot!) Which is part of why our art can look so unique – we’re reflecting the world that we see through our work. A common question that I hear is “how do I find my artistic style?” The best answer that I’ve discovered is that you don’t find it. It has to develop over time. You see a technique that intrigues you and you try it out. Maybe it sticks, maybe it doesn’t, but it informs your future works. Through trial and error – making a lot of work – your style emerges. A style is discovered (or noticed) in hindsight rather than planned and created.
- This week’s artist is – Dustin Yellin – who I just ran across after hearing an interview. His work is not something that would normally capture my attention, but it’s interesting how that changes when you learn about the artist before seeing the work (and sometimes this works the other way!) These pieces are quite detailed, be sure to check out his website and instagram for even more details and information!
- Tonight is the Great Animas City Passeggiata! This is the last one of the year, so head out from 5-8 for local food, beer & cocktails, artisans, music and games! Here’s the online map, schedule, and more information.
- Miss film screenings? The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a FREE Zoom film screening of Silverton Gold tonight from 5:30-7. More information and sign up here.
- I’ve really enjoyed reading through this series explaining Vermeer’s painting techniques.
- This youtube video shares the story of a young Nigerian boy named Waris Kareem who has been creating a sensation with his large realist portrait drawings. It’s refreshing to see how he has applied himself to his work and how he has been nourished by support from his family, community, and government.
- Helpful perspective on choosing an art career, from someone who’s done so.
- David Lynch on getting ideas (video)
- (If you have NetFlix) We can learn from anyone.
- 3 different pencil strokes for various textures/subjects.
- Here’s an alla prima painting tutorial.
- There are quite a few live music options coming up this week. Check out What’s Happening Durango to see the different shows.
- We’ve carried TomBow marker sets for at least a couple of years now… but we recently received an display of open stock so that you can buy one at a time! I love my TomBow markers for sketching on the go.
There have been times when the conversation about discovering your style is frustrating to people. “I really want to draw like so-and-so.” While it’s worth learning from someone – over time what will happen, even if you started copying their style, is that your own style will emerge. That’s ideal. The world doesn’t need another so-and-so. The world need you!
Cheers!
