Sharing some Hope

Be a good steward of your gifts. Protect your time. Feed your inner life. Avoid too much noise. Read good books, have good sentences in your ears. Be by yourself as often as you can. Walk. Take the phone off the hook. Work regular hours.
~ Jane Kenyon

Over the weekend I stumbled across Emily Dickenson’s poem, “Hope” Is The Thing With Feathers and I thought you might appreciate it as I did.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –

That perches in the soul –

And sings the tune without the words –

And never stops — at all –

And sweetest — in the Gale — is heard –

And sore must be the storm –

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –

And on the strangest Sea –

Yet — never — in Extremity,

It asked a crumb — of me.

Hope is the thing that matters. It always has been. Humanity has faced past challenges. Plagues and wars. There was fear then, too. But there was always hope. Hope for a better day. Hope for a brighter future.

It’s important to experiment with your craft. The point is not to make a finished piece, but rather, to simply practice and explore. You can do this in writing (free flow exercises), music, art, etc. So, since you’re probably stuck at home a lot more these day, take advantage of the downtime to feed your inner life. Be it behind the easel, at your writing desk, wood shop, garden, etc. Take the opportunity to learn a new skill, read a book, write a letter, work in your yard/garden, get out for some fresh air, or generally keep busy in some way that nourishes you. Do something creative – you need your art!

Cheers!
