Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice.
~ Ayn Rand
As children we play with legos or doll houses, build forts and play houses. Naturally, we design the world around us. We imagine it to be one way and then do our best to make it come true. As adults, we decorate our spaces to reflect our personalities in our choice of furniture, accessories, and even framed artwork on the walls.
- Anonymous artist Banksy sold a self-destructing piece of art for about $1.4 million last week. A friend shared this video with me in case you want to see it. Of course, now it’s speculated to be worth closer to $2 million, so maybe he’s a genius. You might not know of this anonymous street artist who has built a name for himself over the last few years, but I suspect you’ll recognize his work, both the outside work and the inside pieces.
- Zooming in on the #TownPlazaMural – There was good progress made over the weekend but we missed a whole painting day because of the rain. That seems like a fair trade this time around, though. We’re still working away when we can. One of our goals when putting together the design as to make the mural interesting both from a distance (visible from blocks away) and right up close. Here are a few of the details we’ve incorporated:
- The Durango Arts Center is offering a professional development workshop by Heather Martinez on Saturday the 13th from 9am-4pm. The goal is to identify where you are in your art career/life, within the community, and what you want to create for yourself next. Plus, learn why writing is important and how it can help you tell your story. Also, find the resources you need to support your art career.
- After the workshop there will be a panel discussion on the topic of what it means to identify as a Durango or Four Corner’s artist.
- If you’d like to try out some new scrapbooking materials or work on your art journal, the Scrapbook Nook has a couple of classes this week – Land of Wonder Layouts at 1 on Thursday and Art Journaling at 10 on Saturday.
- It still isn’t too late to join in on the 2018 Inktober 31 drawing challenge. I managed to get a couple of quick things drawn but have a few more ideas to have fun with. Remember, the goal is to get back to creating and to enjoy the process!
If you missed it in last week’s email, Jeramiah sold Matthew the Art Supply House! This is part of my (Matthew’s) world design. I believe that the world needs our art, and we have a need to create. Also that we can use art to explore and have conversations about the world around us. Those conversations can lead to change. If creatives aren’t going to imagine a better (or at least more colorful) world, who is?
