Focusing Outward

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.

~ Calvin Coolidge

Though it may not feel like it, the year is starting to wind down. There’s a bit of holiday rush left to go – and, of course, the holidays themselves. But, we are less than two weeks away from 2019! Where ever did the year go?

  • This week we’re featuring a local artist – Carol Meckling – You’ve probably seen her work around – she’s one of the co-owners of Studio &. Check out some of her work here (it doesn’t show her beautiful scarves or gorgeous ceramic jewelry – you’ll have to head to the DAC’s Winter Solstice Artisan’s Market to see those.) Say hi if you run into her – Carol’s super friendly and great to chat with!

  • There are a few more days to check out the Winter Solstice Artisan’s Market at the Durango Arts Center! If you’re looking for any beautiful, individual pieces (whether as a gift for yourself or someone else!) there are 28 local artists sharing their creations. Swing by and check it out, if you haven’t already! The DAC is open Monday-Saturday from 10-5 until Dec 22.
  • Studio & has a couple of events coming up this week. Crystal Hartman has a Trunk Show on Thursday, December 20th from 4-7pm. Swing by for a warming event, to meet and greet the artist, and check out her magical, scupltural jewels.
  • On Saturday, Studio & is having their annual Holiday party from 6-10pm. Gather ’round to celebrate the holidays, all at once! If you’re a working artist, bring a piece you made (valued at $100) and participate in the Artist Art Swap. Trade for another artist’s work and join in the fun tradition, while also getting some work from one of our peers. If you wish to participate, please arrive (and be present) by 8pm for the swap itself.
  • Local creative Business spotlightCreate Art and Tea – We have a few businesses in Durango that focus on supporting local creatives. Create Art and Tea offers a variety of work by local artists – ranging from ceramics, photography, jewelry and paintings! They also offer a number of delicious teas – whether you need to relax or an energy boost. Stop by the Durango Arts Center and explore Create Art and Tea at 802 E. 2nd Ave.
  • Just for fun, here is a searchable database of over 200,000 Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints! (You might try searching for dragon, ghost, owl, or food.)
  • Looking for an after-school class for next year? Nick at Colorado Clay has weekly kids pottery wheel classes starting up the first couple weeks of January. More information is available on his website.
  • One last reminder that you can join Patrice DeLorenzo at her Winter Color Painting Workshop on December 29th at Seed Studio.

  • Featured product – Pens and Inks – Add some creativity to your cards and envelopes this year with dip pens and ink. Or, try adding a pop of fun colors with Gel Pens!

One quick reminder that we offer Gift Certificates if you’re all shopped out or aren’t sure what to pick up for a loved one.

If you have a long weekend or two coming up, enjoy the time. If possible, take the opportunity to focus on family and friends. People make all the difference in our lives – be sure and let them know how important they are to you. If we don’t see you in the next few days – happy holidays! We appreciate you, love to see your art, and always enjoy the opportunity to chat!

Cheers!
