Art is life seasoning

Art makes the world a better place.

~ Art Supply House

In a past life, I lived in a city that had an art walk every two months. It was a great way to get out, visit with people, see art, and watch others seeing art. Those bimonthly events were conveniently timed to not be overwhelming but often enough to provide inspiration.

  • This week’s artist is – Iain Stewart – who’s been on my artist-to-share list for some time. I saw his work featured in a watercolor show and immediately added him to the list. Today’s finally the day! Check out his website and instagram for more!

  • Jenny Holzer will be 72 on Friday.
  • This year, July has 5 Saturdays in it – which means that customer appreciation day is coming up on Saturday! Is your bag ready?
  • Saturday is also the International Day of Friendship.
  • Studio & is excited to be hosting their first open group show in a few years! The show will be up August 19 -27. More info about their art call here.
  • It feels like I keep seeing comments about the Webb telescope everywhere. Here are some of it’s photos.
  • Thinking about cosmic perspective, here’s a comic about the Webb telescope (and an explanation of the comic).
  • Here are some thoughts on the value of painting with neutral grays. (I can’t decide if that’s intentionally punny or not.)
  • This tutorial shows how to draw tiny trees (and if you like miniatures, check out more of Blake’s work).
  • Later today (Wednesday) the library is hosting the Garden Series. Learn about plant-based survival techniques from 4-6.
  • If you’re looking for something more active, follow that up with the Animas City Night Bazaar from 6-9. This month’s theme – the Great Bazaar-BQ.
  • Friday evening, enjoy the movie Encanto at Buckley Park, starting at dusk. More info here.
  • Since it’s the last Saturday of the month, this Saturday is Hermosa Cafe’s Community Art Market. If you want to participate, here’s some info. If you just want to peruse, swing by between 11-3.
  • Every Monday, from 6:30-9, head over to Guild House Games for Chess club. Free, drop in’s welcome. Upstairs at the Main Mall.
  • If you’re interested in meeting some of the actors in this year’s PlayFest, swing by the Durango Coffee Company Tuesday morning between 8-9.
  • There are classes/workshops/projects available at Create Art and Tea, the Durango Arts Center, and the Scrapbook Nook. There are a lot more things happening that I don’t include – so if you’re ever looking for something to do, start at WhatsHappeningDurango.com
  • There’s live music scattered about town all week. Like tomorrow’s concert at Buckley Park and Friday at Fox Fire Farms. See what else is available here.
  • We have a variety of brushes available at all times – including these packs. They’re great when you just need to grab something quickly, want to try out a new style of brush, or otherwise don’t want to select your own from the myriad choices. These all work with watercolors and range from $4.99 up to Raphael travel brushes.

Appreciating art does not require that you live at the museum and indulge yourself with a never-ending barrage of masterpieces. It’s possible to live a life that’s informed and inspired by art despite getting only occasional glimpses of our most celebrated works. A brief exposure to the pinnacle of beauty doesn’t make you lament the ugliness of the ordinary. If anything, it makes the ordinary easier to appreciate because you learn to see it in a different and more thorough way. Get out, see art, but also make it. Your art is also seasoning for the world!

Cheers!
