Creative Compost

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different.
~ C.S. Lewis

It can be really hard to stop a project, or to drastically change creative directions. Maybe we’ve been making a particular type of work for a long time, and now we’re switching it up. We have to remember that we’re not pointlessly ripping a well-tended project from the ground, roots and all: we’re converting everything that came before into fuel for other ambitions. After composting the old project the resources invested in it can be spent on other things. Ideally, those other things are more relevant to who we are today, compared to who we used to be.

  • This week’s artist is – Rob Gonsalves – whose work a friend shared with me. Rob’s work makes me think of a modern day Escher, if Escher were a painter. Here’s a video interview with the artist, and a slideshow of his work. Check out this website, gallery, and facebook page for even more!

  • George Segal would have been 98 on Saturday.
  • It seems that holiday season is now upon us (what, already?! How’d that happen?) The Art Supply House will be open until 6 today (Wednesday) and then closed until Tuesday so that everyone can enjoy time with family and friends. Have a great weekend and see you next week!
  • I love people’s random collections. Here’s a streetlights photo album.
  • This is an imaginary museum of ridiculously interesting things.
  • These letterheads caught someone’s attention.
  • Here’s a bit of info about sandcastle engineering.
  • Here’s a brief behind-the-scenes video of how pencils are made (graphite and color).
  • Just a bit of dad art humor before the weekend – Did you hear about the man who fell into the printing press? He was all over the news.
  • Here’s a little bit of humor.
  • Durango’s Holiday Rewards program is back, starting this Friday (in case you’re shopping – might as well get more bang for your bucks!)
  • The DAC’s Gift Gallery opens on the 22nd and runs until January 12th.
  • Singing with Santa is Friday from 5:30-7:30 at Buckley Park. Enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies while they last. Santa arrives at 6 pm. Count down to the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. Photos with Santa until 7:30 pm, but bring your own camera and limit two photos per family. More details available here.
  • There are classes/workshops/projects available at Create Art and Tea, the Durango Arts Center, Let’s Letter Together, the 4 Corners Gem and Mineral Club, and the Scrapbook Nook. There are a lot more things happening that I don’t include – so if you’re ever looking for something to do, start at WhatsHappeningDurango.com.
  • Looks like live music is scattered around town this week. See who’s playing where here.
  • Since the how-pencils-are-made video above was by Faber Castell, I thought it only made sense to highlight some of their offerings. And since a lot of people have a long weekend, a calm activity might be nice. We have a range of colored pencils, markers, etc and lots of coloring book options – for kids of all ages!

Perhaps we prune an older project to focus on others that would benefit from the additional time and energy that would otherwise be invested elsewhere. Maybe considering the process of composting a process results in rediscovering its value or figuring out how to repurpose it in some way.

We aren’t static beings. We change over time. What and how we create should change along with us. Doing so – letting something from the past

go – doesn’t mean that resources were wasted, but that it was research and preparation for whatever is coming next. Whatever that next thing happens to be – the world needs your art!

Cheers!
