All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world.
~ Marcel Duchamp
There is often a tension between the internal and external worlds. It exists between an artist’s vision for a project and the final results. It’s there between the viewer and the artist’s interpretation of the message. Permaculture says that “The interface between things is where the most interesting events take place. These are often the most valuable, diverse and productive elements in the system.” This is also true in art. We will grow and learn more slowly as artists if we don’t share our work. And not at all if we don’t create it in the first place.
- This week’s artist – Matt Philleo – is another that I’ve been following for a few years. I ran across his work while looking into portrait painting – not only does he offer commissions but he has put together quite a resource for anyone looking to learn to paint acrylic portraits, and continue following him just to follow along with his story. He shares family vacations, drawing at art festivals, and more fun projects on his blog.
- The Scrapbook Nook has a variety of classes this week: On Thursday they have an Open Session and potluck at 1 so bring your current project and some finger foods to share (please call ahead to reserve your free space). Saturday’s coloring class will be the perfect chance to test out the goreous Inktense Pencils. Tuesday will be focused on making floral cards at 1. (Have I mentioned that you get a discount when you attend classes?) As a reminder, their current art contest is still open for entries.
- Local creative Business spotlight – Powerhouse – We have a few businesses in Durango that focus on supporting local creatives. The Powerhouse has a “wide range of programs, exhibits, and activities designed to provide an entertaining and inspiring look at science — past, present, and future. The Powerhouse is Southwest Colorado’s premier hands-on, interactive science center for all ages.” This includes a maker lab with 3D printers, laser cutters, and quite a range of power and hand tools! It also offers quite a variety of programs, including some pretty awesome kids events. Swing by and check them out, whether you walk along the river trail or drive down to 1333 Camino del Rio – you can’t miss the chimney as a landmark!
- Studio & has an Artist Call for an upcoming juried show – “TRUTH”. Here are details if you might be interested.
- How do you know when a painting is finished? Here are three questions to ask yourself…
- I think this game might be rigged.
- The Winter Photographer’s Special Train is running this weekend. And with the potential forecasted snow – there could be some amazing photos just a snapshot away!
- Sunday the Wild & Scenic Film Festival tour will be at the DAC! Find out more and get your tickets here.
- Share what you love. The world needs your enthusiasm – it’s contagious!
- We’re still accepting entries for the art contest! Show us something you love!
- While you can paint without brushes, it is a bit easier/neater to have a couple ready when it’s paint-slinging time. We’re slowly building up our paintbrush collection/offering. Last weekend we filled out a set of watercolor brushes. Aren’t they purdy!
Returning to our thoughts of margins – it can be hard (and scary) to release our art into the world, where others can judge it, comment on it, and interpret it in ways outside of our original intent. We can only do our part, share our work, take feedback and move forward from there. Some art is made for the sake of creation and never needs to be shared. Other art is made to be seen and thus its purpose is never fulfilled until others have had the opportunity to see it. Either way, the world needs your art!
Cheers!
