You are not offering testimony to the existence of something, you are bringing something into existence—something that did not exist before, and that would not exist if it were not for you. ~ Guy Tal |
In the patience link below I read this quote: “The art historian David Joselit has described paintings as deep reservoirs of temporal experience – ‘time batteries’ – ‘exorbitant stockpiles’ of experience and information.” I’m sure you’ve seen art that has just called you back to it – you see it and find yourself thinking about it hours, days, weeks later. I’ve read that those pieces, the ones that call you back, are the ones you should collect.
- This week’s artist is – Vorja Sánchez – whose series of phantom clouds caught my attention. I’ve always enjoyed larger-than-life beings interacting with their landscape. Be sure to check out his website and instagram for more.
- Food for thought, here are some principles of patience.
- Tomorrow (Thursday) is a fee-free day at Mesa Verde. It’s a great opportunity to go make some art without an entrance fee!
- The students of Mountain Middle School will participate in the ringing of the Animas Museum bell in honor of those who served in WWI. The public is invited, and all veterans are encouraged to attend. Tomorrow (Thursday) at 11:00.
- There are a few paid workshops during this upcoming week. If you’re interested, there’s lost wax casting, solid perfume blending, and an intro to oil painting (Saturday and Tuesday)
- A quest to see every Vermeer in person was completed. And the Essential Vermeer was invaluable in the quest.
- This map shows the true size of Africa. Fascinating to see it compared this way! What an illustrative example of how large a difference perspective makes.
- Velinda Gibbs is starting the Butterfly Artists Collective, a social networking artist group – where fun, friendships, and art go together. They’re meeting the second Sunday at 3PM (which is the 14th) at Velinda’s Mountain Studio (reach out for the address and contact info). They’re having 3-month long contests with $50 gift certificate to the Art Supply House as a prize for the winner. The new contest will be announced this month. If you’re looking to be part of a local artist’s community, check out the Butterfly Artist’s Collective. The only criteria to join the group is to show up for a meeting.
- Need to move a little? Lively (A Boutique) has Free Yoga Fridays from 8:30-9:30. Sign up to reserve your space at www.livelyaboutique.com (BYO mat and water bottle!)
- The 7 Rivers Farmer’s Market is Tuesday, from 12-3 at the fair grounds. Local farmers and artisans.
- The Durango Arts Center has a lot of things going on – classes and workshops for kids of all ages. Check them out here. Maybe the Art of Painting or Pots & Pints.
- In case Ignacio is more conveniently located, the Dancing Spirit Gallery also has classes for students and workshops for adults (like 4 weeks of handmade holiday crafts.)
- Create Art & Tea has events throughout the month. (Like an intro to oil painting on Saturday.)
- Just in case that’s not enough, Artsy Crafty Studio on 3rd Avenue also has classes and workshops.
- The ScrapBook Nook has a class or workshop scheduled almost every day of the week.
- Kristen found some new kits, puzzles, and other goodies that she thought we should bring in to the store. Of course, new things on hand means needing new places to display them. This newly repurposed display has come in pretty handy.
I love the idea of art as reservoir of memory, of energy, of time. Just like people, I’ve been around art (visual, auditory, written, performed) that exuded energy and lightened my day and also around art that sucked the energy out of me. Perhaps it was the mood I was in, the setting it was portrayed in, or the art itself. Whatever it was, that is not art that I would collect! Of course that means, as a creator, that you must have energy to store in your art. Be sure to feed yourself so that you can do justice to your work. After all, you’re bringing something new into existence! Your art changes the world!
Cheers!
