Spring won’t let me stay in this house any longer! I must get out and breathe the air deeply again.
~ Gustav Mahler
At least for the last few days, it’s even felt like it! (We’ll ignore the forecast for the next few days for right now.) I’ve been digging out my watercolors and sketchbook in anticipation of some plein air work. I spent the weekend running around outside with my camera, snapping photos. It’s been a lot of fun and I’m excited about the energy available to create more art.
- This week’s visual and audio artist – Jenn Rawling! You’ve probably seen her lino prints and paintings around, heard some of her music, and could very well have heard her play in person. Whatever form of art you appreciate, Jenn does a fabulous job creating it! Learn more about her and her work on her website.
- Saturday’s workshops at the Scrapbook Nook were a success! This week they have a few more classes: Thursday at 1 and Tuesday at 1 they will be working with a few different materials collections. Join them Saturday at 10 for some Art Journaling with watercolors – from prima sets, watercolor pencils, liquids on to powders! Also, there’s still time to enter their March art contest!
- Local creative Business spotlight – Durango Friends of the Arts – We have a few businesses in Durango that focus on supporting local creatives. As a non-profit, the mission is to offer financial support for the arts in our community. They host many fundraising events throughout the year. As a side effect of working together, many lasting friendships are made between members. If you’re interested in supporting the local art community, you can learn more about the Friends on their website and participate as much or as little as you like. It’s a wonderful way to get acquainted with others who have a common interest in supporting the arts in our community!
- Last week I mentioned Sorrel Sky Gallery and spelled Shanan Campbell Wells name wrong. Sorry about that!
- Unfortunately, The Assortment won’t be playing in the Listening Room at Red Scarf Studio on March 30 (as I shared last week). The studio is unavailable due to some unfortunate circumstances with the event space.
- Learn how to oil paint with some of the best videos available online.
- Strathmore is offering a free Realistic Charcoal Drawing workshop online.
- A beginner’s guide to the underappreciated pencil.
- Our second art contest of the year is under way. Monochrome is the theme – and our first entry is a fabulous gold piece! You can see the contest details here.
- Did you know that Liquitex added some new colors to their Basics acrylics line? Well, they did! This week’s new product is a whole range of colors. If you like playing with acrylic paint, or are curious to start, now’s a great time.
Just in case you’ve missed it, the mural on the back of Kroeger’s in Town Plaza was finished last fall. Local First will be holding a Mural Celebration Party on Wednesday, April 17 from 5-6pm outside by the mural. I’m looking forward to the event, and hope to see you there!
Enjoy the changes in spring weather – all too soon we’ll be complaining how hot it is.
Cheers!
