Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.
~ Laura Ingalls Wilder
It’s an interesting time of year. Summer almost seems to have arrived in Durango and it’s still winter higher up in the mountains. In-between the two extremes are varying piles of snow and blooming flowers. No matter what kind of season you’re experiencing, don’t forget to take a moment to pause and enjoy the view, the little miracles that surround us.
- This week’s artist – Patrice DeLorenzo – is a local who is always a delight to chat with. You may remember her downtown gallery. In recent years she’s been slowing things down a bit and focusing more on making art and teaching others to do the same. If you get a chance to join one of her workshops, don’t hesitate! Learn more about her and her work on her website.
- The Scrapbook Nook has a variety of classes this week: Saturday they’re working with Copic markers. Whether you want a refresher or are just starting out with markers, this will be a wonderful class! Tuesday at 1 they will be making cards with some new dies and stamps! There’s just a few more days to enter April’s art contest!
- Early Release Mondays Art Classes for middle and high school students are offered by the Durango Art Center. Enjoy 2 full hours of creative, non-judgmental, ART FUN! Each week students will discover a new art medium, a new artistic skill, and study some of the greatest artists of all time! Draw, paint, sculpt and create! All materials, snacks, instruction and inspiration are included. Mondays from 3:30-5:30.
- Ever been interested in animation? Here are some lessons from the Disney Masters.
- I studied quite a bit about Egyptian art history in college and thought this was a fascinating article about Mummy Portraits.
- People think that what we do as artists is amazing and love to see “behind the scenes”. A fancy way of saying this is Operational Transparency.
- Patrice DeLorenzo is hosting a painting workshop Creating Color with Simple Techniques on May 18th at Seed Studio in the Smiley Building. Find out more here.
- Our second art contest wrapped up last week. The winners are below. Our third contest starts next week, so get ready!
- Monica’s bison duelled their way to first place
Aly Siebel sent her astronauts in via FaceBook and abducted 2nd place
- The North Main Event is coming! Mark your calendars for May 4th from 11-3pm. Find out more details here.
- In place of a featured item this week, how about an announcement? Everything in the art store will be on sale (25% at minimum!) May 2-4 for the Art Supply House Garage Sale to help clear out everything. No, we aren’t shutting our doors… for long. The following week we will be closed from the 5-10th for a remodel. Saturday the 11th will be our Grand Re-Opening! New products, acrylic paint pouring demos, an in-store eye-spy, and more! We’re super excited and hope you’ll come join us!
There are so many activities going on that it’s hard to choose between them. No matter what you end up doing, be sure to enjoy it. Take a breath of fresh air, do something creative, and revel in the amazing place we live and your life over-all.
Cheers!
Matthew & the Art Supply House crew
