Everyone looks at the world differently (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot!) Which is part of why our art can look so unique – we’re reflecting the world that we see through our work. A common question that I hear is “how do I find my artistic style?” The best answer that I’ve discovered is that you don’t find it. It has to develop over time. You see a technique that intrigues you and you try it out. Maybe it sticks, maybe it doesn’t, but it informs your future works. Through trial and error – making a lot of work – your style emerges. A style is discovered (or noticed) in hindsight rather than planned and created.
- This week’s artist is – Dustin Yellin – who I just ran across after hearing an interview. His work is not something that would normally capture my attention, but it’s interesting how that changes when you learn about the artist before seeing the work (and sometimes this works the other way!) These pieces are quite detailed, be sure to check out his website and instagram for even more details and information!

It’s refreshing to see how he has applied himself to his work and how he has been nourished by support from his family, community, and government.

There have been times when the conversation about discovering your style is frustrating to people. “I really want to draw like so-and-so.” While it’s worth learning from someone – over time what will happen, even if you started copying their style, is that your own style will emerge. That’s ideal. The world doesn’t need another so-and-so. The world need you!
