Where do we go from here?

Age is not the enemy. Stagnation is the enemy. Complacency is the enemy. Stasis is the enemy.
~  Twyla Tharp

Isn’t this one of those eternal questions? We consider what next steps are necessary to achieve a goal, or ponder what the next goal should be. Or should there be more than one goal? Perhaps 3 is a good number? Do they have to build on each other or can we work on them all at the same time? Whew… it can be exhausting. We have to continue moving, growing, learning in order to defeat the “enemies” that Twyla mentions above.

  • This week’s artist is – Lucas Kratochwil – a painter I just ran across recently and had to share his work with you! Of course, I love the mountains so the subject caught my attention – but I also just love the quality of his paintings! It was hard to choose just a few images to share – if you like these, be sure to see more of Lucas’s work on his website and his instagram.
  • The Scrapbook Nook has a full schedule of upcoming classes! Stop by tomorrow at 11 to make a journal where you can journal about your month…big events, daily goals, whatever you like. They’ll be closed on Saturday. Tuesday at 1 they’ll be making 4 Easter-themed cards!
  • Want to learn some yarn arts? Available for the first limited time, get a Yarns, Threads & More Class pass.  For the bargain price of $75.00 you can take as many class as you would like for the one time fee.  They will be adding new classes and are taking requests. • Drawing with light.
  • The above makes me think of all these hands.
  • KDUR’s Furniture as Art Auction fundraiser is tomorrow, from 5:30-9 at the DAC.  Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at Maria’s Bookshop or at KDUR. Your ticket purchase includes 3 drinks and delicious appetizers! They have pieces from over 25 local artists.
  • I liked this poem on how to be perfect.
  • Head to St. Marks Episcopal Church on Sunday from 2-3 for their 13th annual Durango Bach Festival Student Recital. Tickets are $5 at the door. Learn more at DurangoBachFestival.com.
  • Have you ever tried blind contour drawings? Here are some more.
  • Here’s a fun photo series –  Photographer spent days waiting for museum visitors to match the artworks they observe, and it was worth it.
  • And if those photos aren’t quite your style, what about these stunning photos from a 2019 contest exploring the depths of aquatic life around the world?
  • This is a bit of art advice, learned from peacocks.
  • Not all screen time is created equally – this is as true for us as well as kids. Can we watch our body-language to implement lessons learned from this?
  • Today, from 6-7 at the Durango Public Library, check out the current  Durango Diaries: Alternative living structures. As someone who lived in an RV for 2 years and looked into building a tiny house, this sounds pretty interesting to me. Presenters will be people who have lived off the grid, in yurts, teepees and tiny homes – sharing the stories of why they opted to live in nontraditional ways.
  • The 15th annual Durango Film Festival is happening right now – from the 4-8th. Here’s more info.
  • Did you make it to the Art Supply House on Saturday? We had our first 5th Saturday event with some great sales. If you did make it, we were thrilled to see you! If not you can’t participate without a bag, so be sure to pick yours up! You know, unless you don’t want to get a discount on anything that will fit in the bag. The next event is in May – it’ll be here before we know it!

  • Coming up on Monday is the 5th annual One Week 100 People sketch event, from March 9-13. The simple goal is: Draw 100 People in One WeekYou can do it any way you want. Pencil drawings, or pen and ink, maybe watercolor sketches. Whatever it is that you’d like to practice most. There’s a Facebook Group – or – if that’s not your thing, just use the hashtag #OneWeek100People on any social media. More info available here.
  • This week’s featured products are block printing supplies! We have a variety of inks, lino blocks, handles, blades, and more. Everything you might need to get some printing done!

What are you working on in order to fight against stagnation, complacency, and stasis? Do you have a project or goal you’re working toward in order to keep you moving? This is one reason that I’m looking forward to the One Week 100 People sketch event mentioned above – it gives me an external motivator to make sure that I keep sketching. We aren’t quite like the 2 dozen sharks who must keep moving so they don’t drown, but we do have to keep moving so that we don’t become zombiefied mummies of our present selves. Some un-dead version of ourselves on eternal repeat. One way to keep live and growing? Keep making art and trying new things! After all, the world needs your art!

Cheers!

Matthew & the Art Supply House crew
