It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see. ~ Henry David Thoreau |
I recently read about the International Car Forest of the Last Church. It’s a great reminder that what you notice, what catches your attention, what you pay attention to matters. You help it matter even more by focusing on it, studying, considering it further as you make your art and drawing attention to it through your art.
- This week’s artist is – Kate Waters – whose work I recently ran across. These paintings and drawings are impressive – more-so because I’m not willing to take the time required to achieve such hyperrealistic results! Be sure to check out her website for even more.

Being an artist is an act of perpetual self-authorization. It’s easy to get caught up in our day-to-day lives and overlook the little things that capture our attention, that bring us joy. It’s easy to feel like focusing on some “little thing” is a waste of time – that we should be spending our time “more productively.” Whether it’s because the journey matters, because that “little thing” needs our focus on it to flourish, or just because we need to nourish our souls in some way – making art is never a waste of time. You are an artist, you have permission to create. No matter what, the world needs your art!
Cheers!
