Bursting to get out

Your singular perspective may patch some small hole in the vast tattered fabric of humanity.
~ Ryder Carroll

Have you ever been excited about something and just had to share it? Whether by speaking, creating something to represent, or another form of communication? Self-expression is a fundamental human need. Self-expression is as vital to our survival as food or shelter. We must be able to share the stories of our lives – from the small moments of what happened today at school to our grandest theories of what life is about.

  • This week’s artist is – Hirotoshi Ito – whose work I just stumbled across and it caught my attention. When your family has worked in stone sculpting since 1879 and you want to play around with metalsmithing skills, things can take an interesting twist. Check out his instagram for more!

  • Mary Edmonia Lewis would have been 178 on Monday.
  • Sarah Sumner‘s Big Sky series will be viewable tomorrow (Thursday) at Maria’s Bookshop from 5-7. Socializing and some small paintings in the bump-out and the larger paintings will be inside.
  • It seems like I’ve recently had a few conversations about different watercolor papers. Here’s a good overview of types and options, in case you’d like to know more.
  • If you like look over artist’s shoulders at their work, here’s a look into sketchbooks from the Tate’s collection.
  • Here’s an optical illusion that I don’t believe I’ve seen before. I see the red as “closer”. And more information about chromostereopsis.
  • The artist probably needs to be 4 people as well (alas, I’m pretty sure I only have the first two.)
  • I might have to apply these tips for traveling abroad here in Durango – just to help me look around with fresh eyes.
  • Ever wonder how, where, and when horses became man’s other best friend?
  • Tonight (Wednesday) is the Animas City Night Bazaar from 5-8 – featuring a theme of Living Art.
  • Also tonight is the free Word Honey Poetry Workshop from 6-7:30 at The Hive. Swing by if you want to write, read, share, or just to listen and enjoy. Writers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join.
  • Since Friday kicks off a new month, and Monday is Independence Day, it’s a busy weekend! Here are a few highlights:
  • First Friday events at Buck’s Parlor from 12-5 and Create Art & Tea from 5-7.
  • This week’s Movies in the Park is The Sandlot, starting at 7.
  • Head to the Durango Transit Center on Saturday, from 6-10, for a Street Dance, Drone Show, and Fireworks.
  • Monday, at 5, will be the Stars and Stripes Parade down Main Ave.
  • Create Art and Tea’s event calendar for this month is filling up quite nicely.
  • There are quite a few events/classes/workshops available for everyone at the Durango Arts Center.
  • The Scrapbook Nook has a week full of classes and projects, if you’re looking for something creative to do. Call them to reserve your spot.
  • There’s live music scattered about town all week. Like tomorrow’s concert at Buckley Park, concert in the Plaza,  and Friday at Fox Fire Farms. See what else is available here.
  • There are a lot of local events/classes/workshops happening that I don’t include (like most things that require a ticket purchase) – so if you’re ever looking for something to do, start at WhatsHappeningDurango.com
  • In an attempt to (hopefully) simplify things for everyone we’ve revamped the pricing displays on our paints. Since all of our paints come in different series (you can think of them as pricing tiers), and each series is a single price, our new signs show the price per tier and then show where/how to find the series for each paint.

Ideas need to be shared. They want to burst from us, but also be taken in by others. The world is desperate to hear what you know. You can change lives by sharing yourself with others. It takes courage and vulnerability to stand up and deliver your message. It takes going against the grain, refusing to be quiet and hidden in the face of fear. Finding your voice and speaking your truth is a radical act of self-worth. You are worth it. You have something valuable to share. The world needs your art!

Cheers!
