Don’t overthink it!

A writer writes, a painter paints and a photographer photographs. Simple as that.

~ Susannah Conway

It’s easy to talk ourselves out of trying something new. That can be a new material, technique, or approach. I have a friend who says they would love to be a writer, but they never sit down and write. Don’t get caught up thinking about the project – once you have your plan in place (or close enough) then it’s time to roll up the ole sleeves and get to work!

  • Even if you didn’t know it, you’ve probably seen work from Lisa Mackey. This week’s artist is a local, a delight to work with, AND she’s a fabulous photographer and fine art printer. We’ve had the honor of framing a lot of the work she’s printed and it’s nothing short of spectacular. Then you go to her website and see her own photography and… wow, just wow! It’s been a lot of fun to work with her over the last year as she plays around with moleskines, tries printing on different handmade papers, and generally continues to hone her craft. If you want to take a gander at her work in person, swing by Animas Chocolate Company at 920 Main Ave. next time you’re downtown. It’s a great place to sip hot cocoa on these cold winter days. If you want to work with an artist who offers art printing services, get in touch with Lisa.

  • The Scrapbook Nook is back with their regularly scheduled classes this week. Saturday at 10 the Card Class gets to play with some pretty awesome materials, Tuesday at 1 Valentine’s Cards are in the works, and Thursday at 10 the Winter In Colorado Album class will be a perfect way to highlight your new favorite photos!
  • Local creative Business spotlightStudio & – We have a few businesses in Durango that focus on supporting local creatives. Studio & is a gallery and working space that is owned and operated by artists. It’s always enjoyable to see what they are showing that month and to speak with the artists themselves. Perhaps you recognize them for their annual Bizarre Bazaar, but they do so much more than that! Sign up for their newsletter, remember to look at upcoming events, and stop by to say hi and see their current show at 1027 Main Avenue.
  • The Powder Hounds Art Auction is still rolling along. If you’re looking to benefit the Humane Society, then placing a silent auction bid on snowboards created by local artists. Check out the designs at Powder Hounds Art!
  • Need a new background for your phone? What about Draw for the love of drawin’ or Tools do not a craftsman make.

  • Just as a reminder, our art contest is still going on. What is something you love? We’d love to see it!
  • January 23rd is National Handwriting Day. This week’s featured product(s) can help you celebrate. We’ve got something for you, whether you want to become a more creative letterer, learn calligraphy, or just upgrade your everyday writing tools.

I have been told that I have pretty nice handwriting. I have also been informed that my writing is atrocious – and even struggled to read it myself. Part of that legibility depends on whether I take my time and am not just scrawling down something as quickly as possible and part of it depended on practice. I did a little bit of research, chose some tools, and sat down and intentionally practiced. And that made all the difference. You can get from here to there with your creative endeavors, it just takes some time and practice. We’ve got your back – you can do it!

Cheers!
