Exploring at home

As for me, I’m a transplant. I moved here from Australia. After the initial novelty wore off, that of being in England, it assumed a sort of shrugging familiarity — the usual shops, takeaways, a downbeat seafront, rough around the edges but with not-too-inconvenient access to Gatwick and Heathrow and flights to more interesting places.
But a year of exploring St. Leonards and its surrounds, camera in hand, chasing the light, has changed all that. It’s brought home the truth that you don’t need to board a plane and jet off to the far side of the world to experience a sense of travel or the romance of difference. It lies waiting on your doorstep — if you look.
~ Roff Smith

I love traveling. I enjoyed a college semester in Ireland and a 2 year road trip around the US. I also love exploring one place in-depth, going down roads and trails just because I don’t know where they go, sitting still and watching to see who passes by, and generally learning more about a place

  • This week’s artist – Seth Armstrong – One of the projects that I’d like to do (or help coordinate) is to draw every building in Durango, or Bayfield. As I saw these paintings of LA I was reminded of that project once again. Of course, Seth paints more than just the city. Be sure to check out his website and instagram for more!

  • You have to get out from under the influence of your mentors/inspirations as part of your growth as an artist. This article might be written for writers, but it applies equally to visual artists.
  • After all, copying is how we learn.
  • One last highlight from Kristen’s work in the paper section (in case you haven’t yet seen it). We brought in another new-to-us line for everyone to try out.

I explore the world through my art, or at least with an eye to creating it. Art making helps me pause and really look at the world around me. Watching for changes in the light helps me pay closer attention to my surroundings and helps me see the beauty in the otherwise overlooked daily items. Becoming familiar with the world around me helps me feel even more connected to the place I call home, helps me be more invested in the community, and grows my appreciation of this amazing place we live. My art makes me a better local citizen. Hopefully your art practice helps make you a better version of yourself. As always, the world needs your art!

Cheers!
