Perfection is a process

Have no fear of perfection. You’ll never reach it.
~ Salvador Dali

This really resonated with me when I read it and I thought I’d share.

“the concept of perfection is arguably more ideally and healthily thought of as a verb not an adjective. It’s a process, a journey, and it’s through the continued, conscious act of iteration that I’ll be most likely to not just make a space in which I feel comfortable and productive and fulfilled—and in which I can produce gargantuan quantities of curry—but in which I actually feel at home, rather than merely living in a set location where I receive mail and keep my Instant Pot.” ~ Colin Wright

  • This week’s artist is – Valerie Lueth – the artist behind Tugboat Printshop. I love seeing well-done woodcuts and enjoyed reading about her process. Be sure to check out her website and instagram for even more – and look at the individual prints to see process and detail photos!

Colin (who’s quoted above) is in the process of moving into an apartment from a nomadic lifestyle. He is discussing cooking but I believe that the basic thought applies to all aspects of our lives. We can set up our art studio, writing desk, living room, or kitchen in whatever way seems most ideal at the time – but odds are against it staying that way. Ultimately, we will discover a new method, tool, or other factor that causes us to change things up. Perfection is not something that can be achieved – so it’s ok if our spaces don’t perfectly reflect who we are, aren’t perfectly optimized for our purposes, or perfectly anything. They will not be, cannot be perfect. That’s ok. The important part is that they are good enough for the moment, the project, the time period we are currently using them for. Ultimately, even our studio is simply a tool that helps us to make our art. And the world needs our art!

Cheers!
