What do you see?

None of us will ever accomplish anything excellent or commanding except when he listens to this whisper which is heard by him alone.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Did you know that some people can’t form mental images? If they try to mentally picture an apple, they might get a gray blob. Likewise if they try to picture an elephant. I’ve run across the term aphantasia a few different times in recent months and thought I’d share. Sharing this concept led to an interesting discussion with my wife – it’s something we’d never considered before!

  • This week’s artist is – Leigh Waggoner – who’s been in the Art Supply House quite a few times over the last few years. She’s always a delight to chat with! I was (finally) able to see her work in person at the Autumn Arts Festival and had to share with you. Be sure to check out her website for even more!

  • Last week I shared that I’m reading about memory devices. At the same time, I’m also working on reorganizing my writings and personal notes – creating a digital memory (that I’m calling a digital garden.)
  • Any time I travel there is the angst-ridden process of deciding what art supplies to take (clothes are the easy part). This basic guide to plein air painting is helpful, no matter where you might be traveling to. After all, plein air in a metropolitan setting is just urban sketching.
  • Here are answers to 9 life questions, from one artist’s point of view.
  • Edward Aldrich’s opening reception for his The Wonder of the Wild show at Sorrel Sky Gallery is Friday, from 5-7.
  • There is a lot of live music scattered around town. See who’s playing where here.
  • Don’t want to come in to town? Head out to Fox Fire Farms from 6-9 on Friday for live music. Pack your own picnic meal – get a drink at the winery.
  • If you know any students who might be looking for after-school classes/workshops for any students, here’s an overview of what the Durango Arts Center is offering.
  • In case Ignacio is more conveniently located, the Dancing Spirit Gallery also has classes and workshops for students.
  • Just in case that’s not enough, Artsy Crafty Studio on 3rd Avenue also has classes and workshops.
  • Seed Studio is currently enrolling classes for kids of all ages.
  • Are you ready? Saturday, October 30th is the last 5th Saturday of the month!
  • There are always tweaks and improvements to be made. We shuffled some items around and just happened to make more room for our paint-by-numbers in the process. Of course, this isn’t the whole selection. You’ll have to come in and check that out in person!

If you read the links about aphantasia above, you may have noted that a few professional artists (at Pixar, an illustrator, and more) cannot see images in their mind. It baffles me that one could be able to create such amazing art without being able to picture some form of it before-hand. But that’s just me, looking from my comfortable point of view!

Only you have your unique view of the world. Martha Graham said, “Here is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.” Only you can make your art, and the world needs your unique expression!

Cheers!
