100 Years from Now

What action can you take today that will contribute to something you will be proud of in 10 years?
~ James Clear

In last week’s email I mentioned the importance of timing, of remembering that both projects and stages of life have a cycle they have to move through. I ran across the quote above recently, which made me continue thinking about time and timing. Sometimes it can be intimidating to think about “leaving a legacy” – doing something that impacts the world in a lasting way. Other times, it can be freeing (or disheartening) to realize that very few of us will do something that lasts more than a few generations.

  • This week’s artist is – Hiroki Takeda – whose work felt very familiar when I stumbled across it. After looking a bit further, I’ve seen the cat series, too! Check out his instagram for more!

  • Gustav Klimt would have been 160 tomorrow.
  • Can you tell if an image is made by a human or a machine?
  • I might not be a full cartophile, but I enjoyed reading this article about maps in science fiction.
  • If you like trains (or their history) you might check out this website: abandoned rails (there’s one that starts in Durango).
  • Here’s a history of humans being confounded by color photography (and other representations).
  • Like trees (or find them intriguing?) Here’s a list of monumental trees.
  • Tonight is the Word Honey free Poetry Workshop at The Hive from 6-7:30. Join to write, read, share, or just to listen and enjoy. Writers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join.
  • Friday is the Friends of the Library One Day Sale at the Durango Public Library, from 9:30-4. Childrens’ books and paperbacks are 5 for $1.
  • Friday is also Movies in the Park at the Rec Center lawn. This week featuring Sing 2.
  • Every Monday, from 6:30-9, head over to Guild House Games for Chess club. Free, drop in’s welcome. Upstairs at the Main Mall.
  • There are classes/workshops/projects available at Create Art and Tea, the Durango Arts Center, and the Scrapbook Nook. There are a lot more things happening that I don’t include (like most things requiring a ticket purchase) – so if you’re ever looking for something to do, start at WhatsHappeningDurango.com
  • There’s live music scattered about town all week. Like tomorrow’s concert at Buckley Park, Friday at Fox Fire Farms, and Tuesday’s concert at the Plaza. See what else is available here.
  • We try to keep paint-by-numbers on hand, in a variety of levels, subjects, and mediums. If you ever know of someone who might be looking for some, they should swing by to see what’s available. Our goal is to continue having new ones trickling in regularly.

It’s easy to become myopic, focused on what’s happening now, or in the very near future. Keeping a longer timeline in mind can help keep us focused. Instead of bouncing to a new project tomorrow or next week, we can keep the larger picture and the bigger project in mind.

Just about any project has to be done one step at a time. We can’t jump in and do twenty things at once. Whether it’s a quick and easy project to be completed today or something much longer term… we can only take it one step at a time. Like eating the proverbial elephant or taking the thousand mile journey – one bite or step at a time.

What steps are you taking? Whether big or small, the world needs your art!

Cheers!
