Hunger For Art

Food is our common ground, a universal experience.

~ James Beard

I’ve always thought that art, beauty, and creativity are human needs. Looking at prehistoric tools from around the world, things like pottery, weavings, or carvings show great care taken in the details and the “decorations”. From a purely functional point of view, time was wasted making patterns on such utilitarian items. However, I can imagine the pleasure that those crafts-people gained from creating the details, from making a beautiful version of something that would be used every day. Today, it doesn’t matter what we’re doing, but we can choose to let our creativity, our personality, our unique tastes show through. From the planner that we use daily, clothes that we wear, or the way we present our meals.

  • Sureerat Niyomsinth – I’ve been reading EmptyEasel for years now and highly recommend it. If nothing else, they have introduced me to some amazing artists that I would have never discovered another way. This week it was Sureerat Niyomsinth, “a hungry Thai drawing in the Netherlands.” For some time I’ve been thinking that I should draw out some of my favorite recipes, but haven’t quite gotten around to it. Sureerat skipped the recipe phase and went straight for the final product – and the results are mouth-watering!

  • Washed Out – The Ace Mural – Even though we got rained out on Saturday, we still made some great progress this weekend on the mural behind the Kroeger’s Ace Hardware building. On Friday we watched a stage be built for the motorcycle rally and I spotted someone taking photos in front of the wall later in the evening #TownPlazaMural The background is about 99% finished with just a few small touch-ups visible in the third image below. We started adding more details and outlines to the river in the background. We’re still looking for volunteers, though. If you’re interested in helping on the foreground images sign up to volunteer here. Know someone who might be interested in slinging some paint? Please forward this email on to them.

  • Local First is working to help establish Durango’s Creative District. I’m excited about the possibilities and am looking forward to the first meeting to discuss everyone’s visions. If you’re interested, in any capacity, the first meeting will be October 11 at the Rec Center from 5-7pm. Would love to see you there!

Enjoy expressing yourself this week. Use the fancy pen to write your to-do list, wear the colorful scarf, break out the paints, try a new recipe or enjoy presenting a favorite meal in a new way!
